In August 2025, Pennsylvania’s gambling industry generated a remarkable $582.3 million in revenue, marking the second-highest monthly total ever recorded in the state. This figure not only represents a 14.2% increase from the same month last year but also surpasses July’s revenue by 4.4%. Although it fell just short of the all-time high of $601.8 million set in May 2025, the numbers indicate a robust performance for the state’s gaming sector.
Data from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board revealed that physical slot machines continue to be the primary revenue driver. However, the most significant growth was observed in the sports betting segment, which outpaced iGaming in terms of percentage increases.
The iGaming sector alone contributed $231.2 million to the total revenue in August. This marked a significant 25.9% year-on-year increase, with online slots leading the charge. Revenue from online slots soared by 29.6% to $179.3 million, while income from internet table games rose by 14.4% to $49.4 million. Online poker also saw an increase of 12.6% to reach $2.5 million.
Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, along with its online gaming partners, maintained its market leadership in the iGaming sector. In August, they generated $85.5 million, reflecting an 18.5% rise. Valley Forge Casino Resort held onto its second place with $67.6 million, up a remarkable 47.1%. Rivers Casino Philadelphia followed in third position, reporting $36.6 million, which was an 18.5% increase from August 2024.
The sports betting market also experienced significant growth, with taxable revenue rising 63.8% to $49.2 million. Of this, $45.4 million was attributed to online betting, while retail sportsbooks contributed $3.7 million. The total betting handle in Pennsylvania reached $515.4 million, marking a 6.2% increase from the previous year. Online wagers accounted for $490 million, while $25.4 million was wagered in retail settings.
FanDuel, in partnership with Valley Forge Casino Resort, continued to dominate the market. With a gross revenue of $18.8 million from a $171.7 million betting handle, they achieved a hold of 10.95%. DraftKings, collaborating with Hollywood Casino at the Meadows, secured the second spot with $12.3 million from a $144.2 million handle, equating to an 8.53% hold. Fanatics, in conjunction with Hollywood Casino York, remained in third place, generating $3.7 million from $41.3 million, resulting in a hold of 8.96%.
Just behind in fourth place was Hollywood Casino Morgantown with BetMGM, which reported $3.2 million from a $35.4 million handle, achieving a 9.04% hold. Closing the top five were ESPN Bet and Hollywood Casino at Penn National, with $2.8 million from a $24.3 million handle, resulting in an 11.52% hold.
The land-based gaming sector also showed positive trends. Revenue from retail slots increased by 2.6% to $216.6 million, while retail table games saw a slight uptick of 0.1% to $81.1 million. The video gaming terminal sector, however, reported a decline, with revenue from truck stop locations falling 2.4% to $4.6 million. Fantasy sports revenue experienced a modest climb of 2.6% to $664,758.
In terms of taxation, state and local governments collected $238.5 million in August. This included $103.9 million from iGaming, $14.6 million from sports betting, $105.3 million from retail slots, and $12.9 million from land-based table games.
While the industry celebrates these achievements, some observe potential challenges ahead. The competition within the gambling market is intensifying, and maintaining such growth could become increasingly difficult. With new operators constantly entering the scene, the landscape is more competitive than ever. One might think, is there enough room for everyone to thrive?
Despite the tightening market, the optimism remains palpable. The ongoing growth in the iGaming and sports betting sectors demonstrates not only the industry’s resilience but also its adaptability. As one insider mused, the appeal of Pennsylvania’s gambling offerings seems to be stronger than ever, and the potential for further growth remains significant.
However, it’s essential to consider the broader economic context. An economic slowdown or changes in consumer spending could impact such discretionary activities as gambling. Pennsylvania’s gambling industry, while currently thriving, must stay agile and innovative to navigate potential future challenges.
As Pennsylvania’s gaming market continues to evolve, it’s clear that the state has established itself as a major player in the national scene. With strategic investments and a focus on consumer engagement, the industry is poised to keep pushing towards new heights, even as it faces the tests of a competitive and dynamic environment.
