Flutter and Lottomatica Compete for Leadership in Italy's Online Gambling Market

Lottomatica currently maintains a lead in the Italian online gambling sector, but the competition with Flutter Entertainment, which owns the Sisal and SNAI brands, is intensifying. According to analysis from the investment bank Jefferies, Lottomatica accounted for 30% of the Italian online gross gaming revenue (GGR) in the first quarter, while Flutter followed closely with 27%. This rivalry is significant due to the regulatory and market dynamics in Italy, which favor large-scale operators and businesses with established retail and online presences.

The competitive landscape in Italy is rapidly evolving, especially following Flutter’s acquisition of Sisal in August 2022. Since the acquisition, Sisal’s share of the online GGR has increased from approximately 10% to 13%, driven by gains in both online sports betting and iGaming. Conversely, SNAI has experienced a decline, losing around four percentage points in online share over recent years, according to Jefferies. Should Flutter successfully regain the lost ground of SNAI, it could potentially overtake Lottomatica in market positioning.

The strategic importance of this competition lies in the Italian market’s size and growth potential. Jefferies predicts that the country’s gambling GGR will reach €22.6 billion by 2025, positioning it as Europe’s largest market. Despite this, online gambling penetration remains relatively low at 28%, compared to 61% in the UK, indicating substantial room for growth. The online GGR in Italy is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9% from 2025 to 2030.

Furthermore, Italy’s stringent advertising regulations and a new concession regime, which has reduced the number of online licenses from 81 to 52, could accelerate consolidation among the largest operators. These regulatory conditions create an environment where established operators with strong retail and brand presence, such as Flutter and Lottomatica, could thrive.

Flutter’s recent Q2 report provided insights into its strategy and progress. CEO Peter Jackson highlighted robust growth in Italy’s sportsbook and iGaming sectors, noting that Flutter’s revenue performance was ahead of the market. However, the migration of SNAI onto Flutter’s platform in April caused a temporary dip in market share, which has since been recovered, as evidenced by a 30% increase in active monthly players in June, boosted by strong betting activity during the World Cup.

The completion of SNAI’s platform migration is viewed by Jefferies as a potential turning point for the brand, suggesting that Flutter’s market strategy may be starting to take effect. Historically, Sisal under Flutter has outperformed Lottomatica in online growth, particularly in the iGaming sector, across several consecutive quarters.

SNAI offers Flutter additional leverage due to its significant retail presence, which enhances customer acquisition capabilities. The acquisition of SNAI increased Flutter’s online GGR share from 20% to 27% and significantly expanded its retail sports betting footprint. In a market where retail networks are crucial for customer engagement, this represents a strategic advantage.

Despite these developments, Lottomatica is actively reinforcing its position. CEO Guglielmo Angelozzi reported a 12% growth in the Italian online market during Q2, which accelerated to 19% in June. Lottomatica registered growth in sports, iGaming, and total online market share, with a 24% increase in online revenue during Q2 and adjusted EBITDA margins reaching 58% in the first half of the year.

Lottomatica has also seen success with its own platform migration, notably with Planetwin365, which has regained its pre-migration sports share and partially recovered its iGaming market share. The company’s strategy emphasizes maintaining high profitability while acquiring quality market share at sustainable costs, as articulated by Angelozzi and CFO Laurence Van Lancker.

The competition between Flutter and Lottomatica is poised to shape the future of Italy’s online gambling market. While Flutter has demonstrated initial success with its growth strategy, particularly with Sisal, the challenge remains to reverse SNAI’s declining market share. Should Flutter replicate its success with Sisal at SNAI, Jefferies’ data suggests that Lottomatica’s dominance may be challenged.

As this competition unfolds, market observers will focus on the effectiveness of each company’s strategy and the potential for further consolidation in the Italian gambling market. The next steps involve monitoring the impact of regulatory changes and market responses, as both companies continue to vie for leadership in a rapidly evolving landscape.
