Suntrust Resort Holdings, a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based LET Group Holdings listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange, has announced that its integrated resort in Westside City, Manila, is set to open in the third quarter of 2026. This announcement marks a significant milestone in the development of the PHP73 billion (approximately US$1.25 billion) project, which commenced in 2019 with an initial opening date planned for 2022. However, the project has faced numerous global disruptions, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which necessitated adjustments to the timeline. According to the global design consultancy firm Arcadis, the resort is now 75% complete.
In a recent statement, Arcadis shared that the development is nearing completion despite the unprecedented challenges faced during its construction. Project Director Joseph Atabug expressed confidence in the resort, describing it as a “landmark development” that is poised to exceed expectations. He highlighted the team’s resilience in overcoming hurdles that spanned global economic uncertainties and health crises. Westside City is set to redefine the standards of integrated resorts in the region, offering a blend of luxury and entertainment.
Positioned in Manila’s Entertainment City casino zone, the expansive 31-hectare complex is set to elevate the area, which already hosts established integrated resorts like Solaire, Okada Manila, and City of Dreams. A short drive from Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the new resort is strategically located to attract both local and international visitors.
Westside City will boast three hotel towers providing over 2,500 rooms, a state-of-the-art spa and wellness centre, a 3,000-seat performance hall, alongside extensive meeting and convention facilities. The gaming area will feature more than 2,000 slot machines and numerous gaming tables catering to both mass market and VIP guests, promising a comprehensive entertainment experience.
The project is a collaborative venture between Suntrust and Travellers International Hotel Group, known for developing and managing Newport World Resorts in Metro Manila. Travellers took over the development of Westside City in September, a move lauded by industry insiders as a strategic step in positioning the complex as the “Broadway of Asia.” Kevin Tan, Chairman of Travellers, emphasized the resort’s ambition to showcase Filipino talent on a global stage, offering world-class entertainment that celebrates local excellence.
Despite its promising attributes, Suntrust has acknowledged the competitive landscape it will enter. The company has cited potential challenges such as significant competition within the Philippines, economic downturns, and broader economic uncertainties that could impact consumer spending. “The gaming industry in the Philippines is fiercely competitive, and Entertainment City is rapidly evolving into a major casino hub,” the company stated. This competitive pressure is a factor that could influence the financial performance and operations of the hotel casino segment.
Furthermore, Suntrust noted the increasing number of casino complexes emerging across Asia, with integrated resorts set to debut in the United Arab Emirates in 2027 and Japan in 2030. This regional expansion poses additional competition as consumers are presented with more choices for gaming and entertainment experiences.
However, industry experts argue that Westside City’s strategic location and comprehensive offerings may give it an edge. The resort’s proximity to other high-profile destinations in Entertainment City enhances its appeal, potentially drawing a significant share of the tourist market. Moreover, the collaboration with Travellers International brings a wealth of experience in resort management and development, which is anticipated to fortify its market position.
On the other hand, critics caution that the market saturation in Entertainment City could pose risks to new entrants. With established resorts already capturing substantial market share, newcomers must differentiate themselves to attract a consistent customer base. Additionally, economic fluctuations and changes in consumer preferences could impact the anticipated high-volume footfall.
Despite these challenges, the market outlook remains cautiously optimistic. The Philippines’ reputation as a burgeoning gaming destination continues to grow, attracting international investments and tourist interest. In the backdrop of an expanding middle class and increasing disposable incomes, the demand for leisure and entertainment experiences is expected to persist, providing a fertile ground for Westside City’s success.
The opening of Westside City in 2026 will mark a significant addition to Manila’s Entertainment City, potentially shifting the dynamics of the regional gaming industry. With its completion on the horizon, all eyes are on Suntrust and Travellers to see how they will navigate this competitive landscape and what innovations they will introduce to captivate an increasingly discerning audience. As Suntrust prepares to unveil its new flagship resort, the company remains focused on delivering an unparalleled experience that balances luxury, entertainment, and Filipino culture, setting a new benchmark in the industry.
