Sun International has announced the launch of its online betting brand, Sunbet, in Namibia. This development marks Sunbet’s entry into its third African market as of May 2026, following its presence in South Africa and Botswana. The expansion is facilitated through a continued partnership with Bede Gaming, a collaboration that initially commenced in 2017. The performance metrics from Botswana’s operations serve as a benchmark; during the second half of 2025, the Bede-powered platform in Botswana experienced a dramatic increase in user engagement, with registration numbers up by 189% and unique player counts rising by 239%. Wagering activity and gross gaming revenue (GGR) also saw substantial increases of 370% and 350%, respectively.
Sun International’s focus on online operations has been underscored in its fiscal year 2025 report, which highlighted a 7.1% increase in group income, reaching R12.9 billion (approximately $794.7 million), excluding specific one-off factors like the lease cessation of the Table Bay Hotel. Sunbet, in particular, noted a 75.9% surge in income to R2.1 billion, alongside adjusted EBITDA growth of 109.6% to R744 million. Such figures underscore the potential of digital platforms in the company’s overall strategy.
Ulrik Bengtsson, CEO of Sun International, has articulated a vision to double Sunbet’s market share in South Africa’s online betting sector from the current 4.5%. This strategic ambition is supported by significant investment in human resources and product offerings.
