Rank Group Names Richard Harris as Permanent CEO, Solidifying Leadership

The Rank Group, a prominent UK-based leisure and gaming company known for its Mecca bingo halls, has confirmed Richard Harris as its permanent Chief Executive Officer. The decision, announced on Monday, follows Harris’s interim leadership since January 30, 2026. This appointment comes after an extensive executive search led by Rank’s nominations committee, chaired by John Ott, with assistance from MWM Consulting. The search considered both internal and external candidates, ultimately resulting in a unanimous board decision favoring Harris. His appointment marks a significant step for the company as it continues to fortify its strategic direction and market position.

Richard Harris joined Rank’s executive team in May 2022 as the Chief Financial Officer. Before his tenure at Rank, Harris held senior positions at established consumer companies including Marks & Spencer, Foxtons, and Laird. Currently, there is no information regarding a search for Harris’s replacement as CFO.

John H. Ott, Chairman of The Rank Group, emphasized the board’s confidence in Harris by stating, “Following a meticulous recruitment process that identified a robust pool of candidates, the board was unanimous in its decision that Richard was the ideal choice for the role.” Harris’s experience and existing familiarity with Rank are seen as vital assets as the company continues pursuing its medium-term goal of achieving at least £100 million in operating profit while developing long-term strategies.

The leadership change follows the retirement of former CEO John O’Reilly, who announced his departure from the role earlier this year. O’Reilly, who assumed the CEO position in May 2018 after serving as a non-executive director at William Hill, has been credited with leveraging his extensive industry expertise to set a solid foundation for Rank’s future growth. O’Reilly’s contribution is acknowledged by Ott, who stated that his insights and operational expertise have left the company well-positioned for future advancement.

Under Harris’s interim leadership, Rank has reported favorable financial performance. The company recently projected a strong conclusion to the FY25/26 financial year, with like-for-like net gaming revenue reaching £205.4 million in the first quarter. This revenue growth, combined with strong profit conversion, has bolstered Rank’s confidence in surpassing the previous fiscal year’s operating profit of £63.7 million, excluding the effects of club openings, closures, and currency fluctuations.

Harris expressed his commitment to advancing Rank’s objectives, stating, “Rank is a leading business with a strong portfolio of brands that hold a significant presence in the UK gaming sector. I am eager to continue building on the momentum achieved during my tenure as CFO, fostering growth, and evolving the group’s strategic initiatives.” He also acknowledged the dedication and support of his colleagues over the past four years and expressed optimism about Rank’s trajectory under his leadership.

As Rank moves forward under Harris’s leadership, industry analysts will closely monitor how his strategic direction influences the company’s performance in a competitive market landscape. The focus will be on whether Rank can maintain its momentum and achieve its ambitious financial targets amid evolving regulatory and market conditions.

Looking ahead, the transition to permanent CEO aims to solidify Rank’s executive leadership and drive its strategic goals. The company is expected to continue its focus on enhancing operational efficiencies and exploring new growth opportunities within the gaming sector. Market participants will be watching how Rank navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, including any potential regulatory changes that may impact the UK gaming industry. The implementation of these strategies and their impact on Rank’s market position will be key areas of interest as the company progresses through the current fiscal year.
