The Philippines Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has announced a remarkable decline in illegal online gaming activities, marking a significant victory in the country’s ongoing battle against digital gambling crimes.
On Tuesday, the CICC, alongside Gogolook, a global TrustTech company, revealed that there has been an impressive 93.6% reduction in illegal iGaming URLs detected. This dramatic decrease highlights the substantial progress made against unlawful digital gambling operations within the nation. Gogolook, known for its Whoscall digital anti-scam app, has been a vital partner in this effort since its introduction to the Philippines in 2023. This collaboration was further cemented in January when the government renewed its partnership with the company, encouraging Filipino internet users to report illegal online activities actively.
Data from the Whoscall Scam Report illustrates that the number of gambling URLs fell sharply from over 4,300 in the second quarter to a mere 275 in the third quarter. The CICC has credited this success to the government’s intensified efforts in monitoring and dismantling illegal sites, alongside public awareness campaigns that have raised caution about the dangers associated with illegal gambling platforms.
The CICC proudly noted that these results demonstrate the effectiveness of their collaborative efforts with partners like Gogolook. In September, Jeff Kuo, the founder and CEO of Gogolook, expressed to the Manila Standard that the Philippines stands out as one of Whoscall’s fastest-growing markets, dubbing it the “social media capital of the world.” He assured that the freemium model of Whoscall would remain available to Filipinos, underscoring the belief that anti-scam measures should be a fundamental right. Kuo stressed that once knowledge about scammers is obtained, it is crucial to share basic protections freely, especially in the Philippines. He highlighted that combating illegal online activities demands a proactive approach from both consumers and the government, operating within a “shared responsibility framework.”
Additionally, in August, 19 iGaming operators licensed by Pagcor came together to form the PlaySafe Alliance. This coalition aims to tackle illegal gaming operators while educating the public on distinguishing between licensed and unregulated operations. Their initiative complements the government’s mission to curb illegal activities in the iGaming sector.
However, contrasting viewpoints remain, as some industry experts argue that the crackdown on illegal sites could inadvertently boost the allure of such platforms due to the forbidden nature of unlicensed gambling.
