This figure also fell short by 16.4% of December’s record high of $98.5 million. The decline in revenue occurred despite an uptick in the sports betting handle, which saw players wager $808.9 million, a 6.1% increase year-on-year, but still 4.3% lower than the previous month.
Analyzing the market distribution, online betting was the primary contributor to taxable revenue, generating $82.1 million, while retail betting accounted for $302,716. Prior to deductions, gross revenue was reported at $84.4 million. The breakdown of the handle shows that $797.1 million was wagered online, with retail sportsbooks handling $11.8 million. The statewide hold for January was calculated at 10.19%, which reflects the ratio of taxable revenue to the total handle.
Within the operator landscape, DraftKings maintained its dominance in the online betting market in Massachusetts. The operator reported $44.8 million in revenue from $418.3 million in bets, achieving a hold of 10.71%. FanDuel emerged as the main competitor, albeit with significantly lower revenue, reporting $23.2 million from $199.7 million in wagers, which resulted in an 11.62% hold. Following FanDuel, Fanatics occupied the third position with $5.7 million from $62.5 million in bets, translating to a 9.12% hold. BetMGM and theScore Bet rounded out the top five, reporting holds of 7.88% and 7.93% respectively.
In the retail betting sector, Encore Boston Harbor led with $209,263 in taxable revenue from $5.9 million in wagers, marking a hold of 3.57%. This places it ahead of other casinos in the state in terms of retail sports betting revenue.
In addition to sports betting, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission released figures for the state’s land-based casino market, which generated $96.6 million in gross gaming revenue for January. This figure represented a 1.3% decline both year-on-year and compared to December. Slot machines contributed $69.8 million to the revenue, while table games brought in $26.8 million. Encore Boston Harbor was also the leader in this sector, reporting $59.7 million in monthly revenue.
Tax contributions from gambling activities in Massachusetts totaled $44 million for January. Of this, sports betting accounted for $16.5 million, while land-based casino operations contributed $27.6 million.
