This month, the iGaming Business x Women in Gaming Africa column focuses on five extraordinary Kenyan women reshaping Africa’s gaming sector. Their roles, spanning regulators, legal experts, communicators, and platform leaders, illustrate Kenya’s shift from mere growth to industry leadership.
Esther Argwings, assistant director at Kenya’s Gaming, Betting Control and Licensing Board, reflects the industry’s evolution over her 26-year career. From a gaming inspector to senior leadership, she witnessed the expansion from local casinos to a lively digital ecosystem. Esther’s role involves crafting a robust regulatory framework. “The new Gambling Control Act of 2025 opens doors for operators and enhances regulatory tools,” she notes. Her commitment to responsible gaming includes public education on gambling harms and ensuring safety and compliance. Her message to the global community is definitive: Kenya is a hub of innovation, driven by youth and technology.
Agatha Wanjugu, sales and account manager at QTech Games, believes Kenya’s potential is in connectivity. “The industry’s blend of technology, creativity, and community drew me in,” she says. Agatha emphasizes the importance of platforms that link global content with local players while highlighting African skills. “It’s not just about bringing in games; it’s about creating ecosystems featuring esports and local content,” she adds. Her work at QTech focuses on localization and collaboration, adapting offerings to African markets and ensuring responsible growth.
Zsuzsanna Zeibig, general manager at EGT Kenya, offers insights from two decades in the gaming industry. Now leading in Nairobi, she manages digital content distribution and land-based solutions across Africa. She stresses the need for regulatory frameworks suited to African realities, not merely replicating Western models. “Each market has distinct cultural, economic, and political dynamics,” she explains. Zsuzsanna views growth in Kenya’s gaming industry as dependent on aligning technology with African contexts and empowering local stakeholders. “Sports and crash games lead now, but casino content is on the rise. Being part of the early stages of digital gaming in Africa is thrilling,” she remarks.
Lola Okulo, co-founder of Tact Communications and former head of PR for BetPawa Africa, has championed gaming narratives across the continent for nearly a decade. Initially drawn to the industry by chance, she’s become a vocal advocate. “The industry significantly supports sports and ecommerce but grapples with reputation issues,” she says. According to Lola, communication is central to business strategy, fostering trust and guiding decisions. “As a mobile-first market with advanced fintech, Kenya is primed for gaming’s responsible growth,” she explains. Lola aims to elevate communication across African operators, ensuring narratives are controlled proactively.
Aileen Yonah-Mima, general counsel for Carnaval Kenya Ltd, focuses on embedding responsible gaming within corporate frameworks. Her legal expertise is crucial to Kenya’s gaming progress, advocating for AI integration to balance profitability and responsibility. “AI can enhance player experiences while managing risks, ensuring business sustainability and player welfare,” she notes. Aileen’s perspective underscores the coexistence of innovation and ethics in Kenya. “We are a Silicon Savannah, driven by creativity and technology. True success requires deep investment in local talent,” she insists.
Collectively, these women embody a vibrant, ethical, and forward-looking Kenyan gaming industry. They exemplify regulatory excellence, cross-continental collaboration, and advocacy for transparency and inclusion. Their efforts prove Africa’s narrative is shifting from potential to progress.
