A recent study conducted in the Netherlands has highlighted the increasing normalisation of gambling within social environments, indicating potential regulatory and market challenges. The research, commissioned by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch gambling regulator, and published in conjunction with OpenOverGokken, a public information initiative, comes amidst growing concerns over societal attitudes towards gambling. Released this week, the study surveyed 1,000 Dutch adults, revealing that nearly 25% perceive gambling as a regular aspect of their social circles. This trend, according to KSA, could obscure the signs of problem gambling and drive increased participation.
The study’s findings underscore a significant issue: 24% of respondents noted that gambling was seen as routine by their peers. The data showed a gender disparity, with 32% of men and 16% of women identifying gambling as commonplace among their friends and family. KSA expressed concern that this “romanticisation” of gambling might encourage individuals to gamble more frequently. Further insights indicated that 43% of those surveyed would likely refrain from gambling if it wasn’t prevalent among their acquaintances. Additionally, 22% acknowledged having regular gamblers in their social network.
A notable aspect of the discussions around gambling within these social environments is the focus on success and financial gain, with 20% of respondents frequently hearing about gambling as an easy way to earn money. This perception poses a regulatory challenge as it may contribute to the trivialisation of gambling’s risks.
The study also explored attitudes towards gambling-related harm, revealing that 75% attributed gambling problems to poor decision-making. Despite awareness of the potential negative impacts on aspects like work, education, relationships, and sleep, only 11% of participants recognized these consequences. Furthermore, 76% believed it was difficult to identify individuals experiencing gambling-related issues, highlighting a significant gap in awareness and intervention.
The KSA noted the persistent stigma surrounding discussions of gambling problems in the Netherlands. About 29% of respondents indicated they would avoid seeking help if they struggled with gambling addiction, and 34% expressed discomfort in confronting others about their gambling habits. This reluctance to address gambling issues publicly suggests regulatory measures may need to focus on reducing stigma and encouraging open dialogue.
The introduction of the OpenOverGokken platform aims to break the taboo surrounding gambling problems. Launched in October as a successor to the Loket Kansspel website, the platform provides resources on gambling-related issues, offering information, advice, and support. KSA Chairman Michel Groothuizen stressed the importance of this initiative in fostering awareness and providing assistance, noting that gambling problems often develop slowly and remain unnoticed due to social normalisation.
Groothuizen articulated the regulator’s commitment to ensuring accessible information and support for those affected by gambling, emphasizing the social responsibility of the KSA in mitigating gambling harm. The platform seeks to offer independent guidance and facilitate access to appropriate support services, ensuring individuals are not isolated in facing gambling-related challenges.
Looking ahead, the findings of this study could prompt regulatory bodies to evaluate and potentially tighten measures to address the normalisation of gambling. As the KSA continues to monitor the situation, the emphasis will likely be on enhancing public awareness initiatives and encouraging the responsible portrayal of gambling in social contexts. The ongoing challenge for regulators will be balancing market growth with the need to safeguard consumers from the potential harms associated with increased gambling normalisation.
