DraftKings has introduced a new market-making division, dubbed DKeX, aimed at enhancing its prediction market offerings in the United States. The launch, which took place last week, comes at a pivotal moment as international sporting events like the World Cup knockout stage are underway. This strategic move by DraftKings is designed to leverage the company’s existing pricing algorithms and data analytics as it gears up for the busy fall sports schedule. This expansion is significant from a market perspective as it positions DraftKings to potentially become a leading entity in the prediction market sector.
DraftKings’ entry into the prediction market with its proprietary exchange, DKeX, is expected to enhance its control over the technology that powers its offerings. CEO Jason Robins highlighted these advancements during the company’s first-quarter earnings call, noting the possibility of DraftKings becoming one of the top three market-makers globally in this space. Robins also pointed out that the service has already seen substantial activity, with DraftKings Prediction markets recently surpassing $3 billion in annualized trade volume. The integration of DKeX into its broader app ecosystem is seen as a step towards creating a more unified user experience.
However, the introduction of DKeX raises questions about the financial viability of this investment, particularly with a potential loss of up to $300 million anticipated this year. Analysts have debated the realism of this figure, with some suggesting that the actual investment losses might be significantly higher. This is partly due to the competitive landscape in which DraftKings operates, where revenue generation through trading fees is a critical factor. DraftKings’ current partnerships, like those with CME Group and Crypto.com, preclude it from collecting substantial trading fees, which are typically a major revenue source for market-makers.
The fee structure DraftKings has adopted for DKeX is akin to those used by competitors like Kalshi. Market-takers on the platform face trading fees ranging from $0.005 to $0.01 per contract, and these vary depending on the contract price. Meanwhile, market-makers are charged a fee of $0.0025 per contract. Market-takers execute trades immediately against existing orders, which contrasts with market-makers who place orders that remain in the system until they are matched.
Following the announcement of the new exchange, DraftKings’ stock saw an 11% increase, closing at approximately $27.59 per share. Despite this uptick, the company’s stock remains significantly below its 2025 post-Super Bowl peak. Analysts like Jordan Bender from Citizens suggest that the market-making initiative could potentially boost DraftKings’ EBITDA in the future, given the high gross margins associated with this business model. According to Citizens, market-making could generate $243 million in revenue for DraftKings by 2027.
On the other side of the spectrum, Bank of America has provided a more cautious outlook, projecting that DraftKings could incur losses of up to $550 million in its prediction market endeavors this year, as reported by Bloomberg. These financial forecasts underscore the high stakes involved in this expansion and the need for DraftKings to effectively manage its market-making operations.
The broader prediction market landscape is also experiencing significant shifts. Kalshi, another player in the prediction market, recently announced a new funding round that could value the company at $40 billion, doubling its valuation from earlier this year. This trend of increasing valuations and the potential for mergers and acquisitions is partly fueled by the introduction of vertically integrated platforms like DKeX, which are reshaping the competitive environment in prediction markets, sportsbooks, and related sectors.
As DraftKings moves forward with its market-making division, industry observers will be watching closely to see how the investment plays out against the backdrop of a competitive and rapidly evolving market. The coming months are expected to provide further clarity on the financial and operational impacts of DKeX, with potential updates on regulatory adjustments and market responses likely to emerge as the new exchange becomes fully operational.
