Publicist Confirms Recovery, Requests Privacy
Scott Thompson, the Las Vegas-based comedian better known by his stage name Carrot Top, was rushed to a hospital on Friday, Sept. 18, following a reported suicide attempt. The incident was first reported by TMZ. Jami Schlicher, Thompson’s publicist, confirmed that the 61-year-old entertainer is currently recovering and receiving care. Schlicher did not address the specific cause of the incident in her statement but asked for privacy on behalf of Thompson’s family and close friends.
Thompson has held a residency at the Luxor resort for more than 20 years, making it the longest-running current Strip residency. He has headlined the Atrium Showroom since November 2005. His performance typically mixes prop comedy, blue humor, and topical material. MGM Resorts, which operates the Luxor, referred questions regarding the incident to the statement released by Schlicher’s office.
Weekend Performances Canceled
The hospitalization resulted in the immediate cancellation of Thompson’s scheduled performances at the Luxor’s Atrium Showroom. The show set for Friday evening, Sept. 18, was canceled, as was the performance scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19. The residency is typically dark on Sundays. As of Friday night, the Monday 8 p.m. performance remained listed for sale on the venue’s schedule, though the Luxor has not yet announced a definitive return date for the residency.
Witnesses reported seeing Thompson at Finney’s Crafthouse in the Downtown Summerlin neighborhood at 2 p.m. on Friday. He was accompanied by two companions at the time. The comedian was last seen in that location before being transported to the hospital later that day. No further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the hospitalization have been released by authorities or the property.
Long-Running Residency Faces Uncertainty
Thompson’s tenure at the Luxor began in late 2005, establishing a presence that has spanned two decades. His contract has been extended through several subsequent deals, cementing his status as a staple of the Las Vegas entertainment landscape. The sudden cancellations leave a gap in the Atrium Showroom’s calendar during a period when the venue typically operates daily, excluding Sundays.
The cancellation affects ticket holders who purchased seats for the Friday and Saturday performances. Standard refund policies for such cancellations are generally handled by the venue or the ticketing platform, though specific details for this instance have not been publicly detailed by MGM Resorts or the artist’s team. The focus from the publicist’s office remains on Thompson’s recovery, with no additional statements expected regarding the incident’s specifics.
The situation underscores the operational complexities of long-term residencies in the Las Vegas market, where artist availability is a critical component of the product offering. Until a return date is announced, the Atrium Showroom remains without its headline act for the upcoming weekend. Stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality sectors are monitoring the situation, but no broader industry impact has been stated by regulators or operators.
Why It Matters
The cancellation of Carrot Top’s shows removes a major headline act from the Luxor’s Atrium Showroom, disrupting the venue’s daily entertainment schedule. Ticket holders for the canceled Friday and Saturday performances face uncertainty regarding refunds or rescheduling, while MGM Resorts has not announced a return date. This incident highlights the operational risks associated with long-term artist residencies in Las Vegas, where a single performer’s availability can significantly impact a property’s entertainment lineup and revenue stream.
