The organisers of the 74th Miss Universe beauty pageant are under scrutiny in Thailand following a controversial social media post by a Filipina contestant, who appeared to endorse a Philippine-based online gambling site. This post, which prominently featured the PlayTime logo on a pillow as the contestant held an iPhone, has sparked a police investigation due to the promotion of gambling, which is illegal in Thailand.
On social media, the contestant invited followers to join her on PlayTime, offering credits worth PHP300K in exchange for their follow. The promotion has caught the attention of Thai authorities, as the country maintains strict prohibitions against online gambling. Only state-run lotteries and horse race betting are legally permitted within Thailand’s borders.
PlayTime, a licensed gaming site in the Philippines, promotes itself as the country’s leading legal gambling platform. It recently announced its partnership as an “official journey partner” of the Miss Universe pageant, pledging to deliver exclusive content and behind-the-scenes access that would enhance the global spectacle. However, this partnership has unexpectedly led to controversy given the legal restrictions in Thailand where the pageant’s finale will take place in Nonthaburi on 21 November.
Thailand’s stance on gambling was reinforced recently during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirukal expressed support for Xi’s anti-gambling stance and confirmed that no casino legislation would be pursued during his tenure. In this context, the promotion of an online gambling site at a high-profile event like Miss Universe poses serious legal and diplomatic implications.
The incident unfolded at a Bangkok hotel, reportedly orchestrated by Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú, a shareholder in the Miss Universe Organization (MUO). Witnesses and hotel staff, disturbed by the promotional activities, notified local police. Officers who responded to the call seized the promotional materials, including the pillow and video equipment, and brought members of the MUO team to Wat Phraya Krai Police Station for questioning.
Nawat Itsaragrisil, vice president of Miss Universe Thailand, distanced the local organisers from the incident, stating that the promotion was solely the responsibility of the Miss Universe Organization and that he had no prior knowledge or involvement. This assertion highlights the complexities and potential miscommunications between international and local organising bodies.
The fallout continued as tensions rose between participants. Mexican contestant Fatima Bosch refused to engage in activities organised by the Thai public relations team, citing disrespectful treatment. Her protest was supported by Miss Universe 2024 winner Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark, who joined Bosch in leaving the event. Their actions prompted other contestants to follow suit, leading to a tense standoff where Nawat reportedly instructed security to block exits, intensifying the situation.
Cuban vlogger Luis Portelles captured the unfolding drama, describing the scene as “chaotic.” The incident underscores the potential for discord when cultural expectations and legal frameworks collide in high-stakes international events. Theilvig later expressed a sense of solidarity among the contestants on Instagram, posting an image alongside fellow participants with the message, “This is women empowerment. This is sisterhood. Forever and always.”
Critics argue that such incidents reflect a lack of sensitivity and awareness on the part of international organisers towards the legal and cultural norms of host countries. They suggest that more stringent checks and balances should be implemented to prevent similar controversies in the future.
Conversely, some contend that the global nature of the Miss Universe pageant inherently involves navigating diverse legal landscapes and cultural expectations, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. They advocate for a more nuanced approach that allows for dialogue and compromise between different stakeholders to avoid escalation.
As the investigation continues, the organisers face the challenge of addressing the diplomatic fallout while ensuring that the pageant can proceed smoothly. This situation highlights the delicate balance between international partnerships and adherence to local laws, a challenge that continues to confront global events in an increasingly interconnected world.
