Flamengo footballer Bruno Henrique has been handed a 12-game suspension and fined BRL60,000 ($11,112) following revelations of misconduct aimed at influencing a match outcome for betting purposes. The ruling was delivered by the First Disciplinary Committee of Brazil’s Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) after it determined, by majority vote, that Henrique deliberately sought a yellow card during a 2023 match between Flamengo and Santos.
The decision comes on the heels of an investigation by the Federal Police, which unveiled a significant number of bets targeting Henrique’s yellow card, all traced to accounts from the Belo Horizonte area—Henrique’s hometown. Judge Guedes described Wander as the “mastermind” behind the scheme, imposing a 24-match suspension, which was later halved due to Wander’s status as an amateur athlete. The judge also approved the Prosecutor Office’s request to notify the Brazilian Football Confederation, aiming to extend the sanctions to Henrique’s FIFA registration, thereby applying the penalties worldwide.
